How often have you heard that?<\/p>\n

The truth is that supervisors tend to refrain from praising, for two reasons.<\/p>\n

The first is that praising is complicated\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0can be damaging<\/a>: better hold back. No action, no mistakes, right?<\/p>\n

The second reason is that for many managers their staff are invisible: they don\u2019t notice the people or their actions.<\/p>\n

What suggestions can we offer to those few willing managers who have discovered the magical power of praise but still don\u2019t feel confident about how best to use it?<\/p>\n

Here are the\u00a0golden rules of constructive praise<\/b>.<\/p>\n

When<\/h4>\n
    \n
  • Immediately after observing the behaviour you wish to encourage<\/li>\n
  • After thorough preparation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Where<\/h4>\n
      \n
    • Better in private, ideally not in public<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      How<\/h4>\n
        \n
      • Talk about the practice you want to promote, separating it from any appraisal of the person<\/li>\n
      • Express praise clearly and briefly, focusing on the behaviour you intend to encourage<\/li>\n
      • No longer than 120 seconds<\/li>\n
      • Wait for a reply or comment<\/li>\n
      • Round off by confirming your faith in the person<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Communication style<\/h4>\n
          \n
        • Do not use \u201cemphatic\u201d words, and the staff member must neither feel a genius nor irreplaceable<\/li>\n
        • Use a level tone of voice<\/li>\n
        • Never repeat the same concept twice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          To cut a long story short, if one of your staff does something well, you can acknowledge their value only by saying:<\/p>\n

          Hey, you\u2019ve done a good job!<\/h4>\n
