Changing people’s behaviour is an art.<\/p>\n

As we already know, the reprimand is used to change undesired behaviour.<\/p>\n

And as a loyal reader of my blog, you are undoubtedly familiar with both the constructive reprimand<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0destructive reprimand<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But what do you do when you want to reinforce a behaviour you wholeheartedly approve?<\/p>\n

I know, of course, your staff is mostly incompetent, and there\u2019s not much to praise.<\/p>\n

However, a miracle sometimes happens, mysteriously, and you find yourself praising spontaneously.<\/p>\n

How do you handle it? The most widely used technique is that of the panegyric<\/strong>: let\u2019s take a look at it in detail.<\/p>\n

When to praise<\/h4>\n
    \n
  • Immediately after observing the behaviour, you wish to encourage, on the emotional spur of the moment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Where<\/h4>\n
      \n
    • Much better in public, so that everybody can see what a genius you\u2019ve managed to pull on board.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      How<\/h4>\n
        \n
      • 15-20 minutes should be enough because the tension inside you has gone now and you can completely \u201clet go\u201d.<\/li>\n
      • You may indulge in emphasising his personal qualities: he\u2019ll soon believe he\u2019s a genius and start losing touch with his practical side.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Then<\/h4>\n
          \n
        • Be prepared \u2013 but you already know, don\u2019t you? \u2013 for the request of a salary raise or some other privilege: sooner or later it\u2019ll come, it\u2019s inevitable.<\/li>\n
        • The next time you have to reprimand him \u2013 and sooner or later that day will come \u2013 you\u2019ll find it very hard, so much harder.<\/li>\n
        • After all, why would you want to reprimand someone as good as him?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          In other words, praise is more complicated than a reprimand. And more dangerous.<\/p>\n

          Why? If the destructive reprimand is something individuals get over in time, restoring self-awareness may be hard to do, and takes a long time.<\/p>\n

          So, what\u2019s best?<\/p>\n
