{"id":4651,"date":"2021-07-06T13:10:51","date_gmt":"2021-07-06T11:10:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tibicon.net\/en\/?p=4651"},"modified":"2021-07-12T06:43:19","modified_gmt":"2021-07-12T04:43:19","slug":"do-you-really-know-what-you-think-you-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tibicon.net\/en\/2021\/07\/do-you-really-know-what-you-think-you-know\/","title":{"rendered":"Do you really know what you think you know?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today I want to talk to you about a test that might be useful in assessing your knowledge on a specific matter.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"parent-p-bottom-0\">It is a short test that I learned to take on two important occasions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>whenever I am about to face a task that is new to me, at least partially;<\/li>\n<li>when I want to check the depth of my knowledge of topics I think I can master.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can do it all by yourself, without the help of experts: and then, you can yourself assess the result.<\/p>\n<p>Do you want to know more? Here is a short summary.<\/p>\n<h4>When can you use it?<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Anytime you feel it might be helpful to test your knowledge of a topic you will be required to employ shortly.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>How long does it take?<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em>No longer than 15 minutes.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>What tools can you use?<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em>An A4 sheet of paper, a pencil and an eraser. <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Alternatively, you can use PowerPoint or WORD; white paper and pencil are definitely more effective.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>What should you NOT use?<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Disconnect from the Internet so that you cannot give in to the temptation to collect information.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>For the same reason, do not access your personal computer hard drive.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Identify the topic you want to assess your knowledge of.<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em>It doesn&#8217;t need to be broad; choose a specific aspect whose understanding may prove crucial in managing the task you expect to tackle.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Choose a target audience<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Imagine that you have to explain the matter of your interest to one or two people (no more, so as not to add to the difficulty of managing a large audience).<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Prepare your presentation<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Use the white paper to explain the topic, giving organic structure to your knowledge and making sure that at the end he\/she has understood at least the essential elements. <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>A few tips:<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li><em>if after 5 minutes you haven&#8217;t done much, don&#8217;t get discouraged: collecting the knowledge may turn out to be a difficult exercise, and may not be immediate;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>be careful not to fall into the trap of thinking that you know the matter very well and consider the exercise useless;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>if the structure of your presentation requires more than one sheet of paper, do not hesitate to get more.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Results<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Did you succeed? Do you think you did a good job? <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>I\u2019m very glad!<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>However, if after 15 minutes you feel you haven&#8217;t achieved much, don&#8217;t get discouraged.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Just stop for a while and identify the areas that you need to strengthen and get prepared.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Then repeat the test.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What do you think about the test? Can it be a helpful tool?<\/p>\n<p>I have used it successfully in selection interviews, or when I wanted to help a team member to consciously check the mastering of specific knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>However, it is on me that the test has been most helpful:<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">its brutal effectiveness in laying naked my ignorance has every time a bitter taste,<br \/>\nwhich I have learned to bear and appreciate.<\/h4>\n<p>Especially when I think that going crashing can be much, much more painful.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t you think?<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Post Scriptum<\/h4>\n<p>Should you find it difficult to identify a subject to submit to the white paper test, here below are a few topics I&#8217;ve seen respected professionals falter on.<\/p>\n<h4>Human Resources<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Describe, in a concise and immediate format, the performance management process.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Controlling<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Identify the 5 main indicators of business profitability and the related methods of calculation.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Project management<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Identifies the flowchart of a project, describing the key parameters.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Innovation<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em>How many types of innovation do you know? Can you give a concise definition? <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>How do they differ from one another?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Production process<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em>What are the variables you keep under control when managing a manufacturing process? <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>For what reasons?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Social media marketing<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em>How do you select the social media to employ in your marketing campaigns?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Sales management<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em>How many different kinds of salespeople do you know? <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Can you briefly profile them?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Starting with these examples it may be easier for you to identify a topic to test your knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>After the test, would you let me know if it was helpful?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today I want to talk to you about a test that might be useful in assessing your knowledge on a specific matter.
