What do you do?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Do you use to justify your delay, even though no one asked you to?<\/p>\n<p>And what justification you use to placate the irritation of people who are waiting for you?<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"parent-p-bottom-0\">Here are some, among the most popular ones:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Traffic like never before!<\/li>\n<li>The alarm clock didn&#8217;t go off&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>My son didn&#8217;t want to get up!<\/li>\n<li>&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"parent-p-bottom-0\">There are more creative ones:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The car just stalled and didn&#8217;t want to start.<\/li>\n<li>Some idiot double-parked and I couldn&#8217;t get out.<\/li>\n<li>Two crashed just in front of me.<\/li>\n<li>&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What saves you from the embarrassment?<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the rush of resuming the outstanding meeting because of your delay; you get back to work and move on.<\/p>\n<p>The question I would like to answer is this:<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">why do we want so much to justify our behaviour?<\/h4>\n<p>The intent is to convey a message that sounds something like this:<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Don&#8217;t think that I had more important things to do, or that I have no respect for your time.<br \/>\nWhat happened is out of my control: without drawbacks, I would have been right on time!<\/h4>\n<p>What are our chances of achieving the goal with such a message?<\/p>\n<p>Few, definitely, even when it comes to people who are usually on time to justify themselves.<\/p>\n<p>What to do then?<\/p>\n<p>Experience suggests apologizing for the delay, as good manners also dictate, but to<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">resist the temptation to give explanations,<br \/>\nproviding them only if expressly requested.<\/h4>\n<p>I know, managing anxiety is tough, but it will help you avoid situations like the one in the cartoon&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t you think?<\/p>\n<p>PS: In the unlucky case that someone asks you to explain your delay, I would suggest you avoid &#8220;imaginative&#8221; justifications&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you use to justify your delay, even though no one asked you to?
