Need for esteem and self-esteem

Need to build a positive self-image, which can engender self-confidence and enhance the person’s sense of worth. A possible distinction is between the need to be esteemed by others (respect, appreciation, dignity, importance of social status, power) and the need for self-esteem (strength, achievement, sense of adequacy, competence, mastery). Like the need for belonging and self-actualization, these belong to the group of secondary needs, because they are generally of a psychological nature and vary quite significantly from one individual to another.
