A situation that is more common than you might think...

Thinking on a tight leash

2026 March 31 | by Arduino Mancini Delegation - Negotiation

I have extensive experience in negotiation, both as a manager and as an advisor to clients in drafting agreements of various kinds.

While expressing appreciation for the options the table, some remained hesitant, while others had no hesitation in expressing their doubts, openly asking themselves questions such as:

  • Will the boss agree? What would he do in my place?
  • What do I do if he doesn’t approve the solution? How do I handle it?
  • If I get it wrong, how can I avoid taking responsibility?

It is clear that in these cases, the negotiator’s autonomy is limited, simply because the terms of delegation are unclear.

Furthermore, the boss remains blissfully unaware that staff are thinking on a tight leash,

more focused on identifying solutions
that the boss will approve
than the best possible solution!

Perhaps, for some, finding the best possible solution isn’t a priority, because

the ego comes first!

What do you think?
